Verify and Lookup KRA PIN Using Passport or Alien ID Number

Non-Kenyan residents, expatriates, and foreign investors can lookup and verify their tax details using their registered Passport or Alien Card numbers. This page assists you in checking status on the iTax database.

1. Verification Process for Non-Kenyan Residents

When registering for a KRA PIN as a non-citizen or non-resident, your registration is bound to your international Passport or Alien Card ID. To perform a lookup, select 'Non-Kenyan Resident' or 'Non-Resident' from the taxpayer category drop-down list on our checker form.

Enter your passport number exactly as it was provided during registration (including letters and special characters) to search the system.

2. Crucial Guidelines for Expats & Foreign Corporations

Non-Kenyan residents often register to open bank accounts, invest in local enterprises, or secure employment in Kenya. Checking that your PIN is linked to the correct passport number prevents transaction rejections with financial institutions.

  • Check case-sensitivity in passport letter characters.
  • Verify the PIN has the status 'Active' on the iTax registry.
  • Update your passport details in case of renewal by filing a KRA amendment form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a foreign company register for a KRA PIN?

Yes. Foreign companies operating or registering branches in Kenya are issued corporate KRA PINs. They can be verified by selecting the 'Company' category and entering the corporate registration certificate number.

Do non-residents have to file annual returns?

Yes. As long as your KRA PIN is active, you are required to file income tax returns or Nil returns annually, even if you did not earn income locally during the tax year.
